House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said today he does not want to shut the government down over Obamacare, preferring instead to negotiate with Republicans on the issue.
He conceded, however, that a shutdown is possible when the law currently funding the federal government expires on March 4.
If House Republicans pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded after March 4, but deny funding for any implementation of Obamacare in that resolution, the Democrats (who control the Senate and the White House) must either agree to defund the implementation of Obamacare through the remainder of this fiscal or try to force the House Republicans to reconsider their position and pass another continuing resolution that does fund implementation of Obamacare.
