Tell Your Congressman to Vote “No” on the Paycheck Fairness Act
Today, Speaker Pelosi is moving forward with a bill that will hurt women and their families. H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act, does not “close the gender wage gap” or give women more money in their paychecks. In fact, this bill eliminates the choices that women enjoy in their workplaces.
Equal pay for equal work was passed into law through Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Equal Pay Act of 1963. It has been illegal to discriminate against women and men on the basis of pay for many years now. Studies show that women are more likely to choose jobs for reasons other than pay such as better benefits such as liberal family leave, flexibility in schedule, and a reliable work-life balance. A one-size-fits-all plan will disenfranchise women by eliminating their choices.
The only people who will benefit from this law are lawyers. This bill forces businesses to explain any paycheck discrepancies. This will mean more payroll hours for corporate attorneys and less money for these businesses to put elsewhere, like employees’ paychecks. Lawyers will also see many unintentional discrimination lawsuits as easy wins which will discredit any intentional discrimination lawsuits.
This bill is unnecessary and unfair. Women should not be punished for choosing to make their family a priority!
Please call or email your Representative to urge them to vote “NO” on H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act.
